What do people want to know about a freelance writer, anyway?
The answers to this question vary as much as each potential client's needs. You will find that I am -- pun intended -- an open book if there is anything you want to know. These FAQs and their answers tell some of the story:
1. How long have you been getting paid to write?
About 28 years.
2. What kinds of things do you write?
I enjoy multiple genres and trying new things, but my years of experience break out this way:
3. How long have you been a freelance writer?
I started offering services independently in 2013.
4. What kind of writing have you done as a freelancer?
News, magazine, SEO and keyword content, blogs, advertising, business documents...
5. Do you have a college degree?
Yes, a bachelor's in communication - journalism from the University of Texas Arlington.
6. Do you work much with photos or graphics?
Yes, frequently and for many years. I've learned vast amounts on the job, from professional photographers and graphic designers and from lots of experimentation. I've taken and edited photos, produced websites and daily content for them, generated digital and printed presentations and studied visual communication.
7. Do you work better alone or with a team?
Each mode is a different kind of opportunity to produce excellence.
8. What programs and software do you know?
I offer proficiency in most of the the Microsoft & Adobe suites plus have a working knowledge and/or experience with a number of collaborative-work platforms, databases and systems.
9. Have you had byline pieces published? If so, what kind?
Yes. As a multimedia journalist for 13 years, I typically produced at least five stories per week and have regular bylines as a freelancer. The pieces include or have included opinion columns, news articles, feature stories and government reporting.
10. What's the best thing about being a writer?
There's a lot to like, but the best for me is constantly learning.
The beautiful beach scene on this page is a picture I took during a 2019 girls' vacation at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.
Nature inspires and refreshes me, and so does a good outdoor adventure like river canoeing, mountain hiking or primitive camping.
I like the everyday adventures too, such as marriage, family relationships, pet care, home maintenance, gardening...
Again, please feel free to ask anything you'd like to know.
